Walking Towards Health: A Statewide Success

| Kansas

In Kansas, the Walk With Ease (WWE) program is transforming lives by helping sedentary adults across the state, particularly those in low-resource communities, integrate physical activity into their routines. This evidence-based, six-week exercise program, developed by the Arthritis Foundation, is tailored for individuals with arthritis but is accessible to anyone looking to enhance their physical activity levels. It is especially beneficial for older adults, offering a low-impact way to stay active.

Addressing the Need

The need for Walk With Ease is evident across various regions in Kansas. In Kansas, the statistics highlight a significant challenge: nearly 17% of the population is over 65 (US Census Bureau, 2020), and 27% of adults have arthritis (CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2022). Despite this, according to America’s Health Rankings, only 21% of adults in Kansas meet the recommended levels of both aerobic and strengthening exercises. These figures underscore the critical need for accessible and effective physical activity programs.

Program Implementation and Impact

Kansas SNAP-Ed has taken a proactive approach to address these needs by providing the Walk With Ease program across the state. In 2023, Kansas SNAP-Ed educators established 13 WWE classes statewide. These 18-session programs meet three times a week and incorporate walking, stretching, and cooling down exercises.

Walk With Ease has been instrumental in increasing physical activity among older adults. The program's structured format, which includes safe stretching techniques, strengthening exercises, and realistic fitness goals, has led to notable improvements. With 233 participants enrolled in the WWE classes in 2023, 90 completed post-surveys showing enhanced fitness and confidence, and other positive outcomes.

After participating in the program, participants reported:

  • Improvements in balance, stamina, and overall health
  • Increased social interaction and community support
  • Increased levels of activity from an average of 2 days a week to an average of 5 days a week
  • Noticeable enhancements in everyday tasks such as carrying groceries and climbing stairs

Sustaining Success and Future Plans

The success of Walk With Ease is a testament to the effectiveness of the program in promoting physical activity and improving quality of life. Use of outside grant funding to support local resources, such as a paved walking trail in Riverton, KS, further supports the program’s success by providing convenient, accessible spaces for ongoing physical activity.

Looking ahead, Kansas SNAP-Ed is committed to continuing the Walk With Ease program, expanding its reach, and exploring new ways to support physical activity in low-resource communities. By maintaining focus on both immediate and long-term health benefits, and fostering local support through community resources, the program aims to help more Kansans walk their way to better health.

Conclusion

Walk With Ease is more than just a walking program—it's a vital tool for enhancing physical health and well-being across Kansas. With its proven benefits and ongoing success, it exemplifies the power of community-based programs in making a tangible difference in the lives of older adults and those with arthritis. As Kansas SNAP-Ed continues to support and expand this initiative, more residents will have the opportunity to enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Mom’s willingness to try new things like a walking program, without knowing anyone in the activity, has made her more adventurous in doing things independently. It is noticeable that her stamina and endurance for being on her feet has improved, leading to more energy on days when she's on her feet a lot, which is often. She feels it is easier for her to walk and she has confidence to walk WITHOUT her walker now. She feels like her muscles have been strengthened. She misses walking on the days when the program is not in session.
