Apr 27, 2023 Students learned about an ancient method of seed dispersal and seeding without the need for containers of any kind. The team introduced new, novel garden-based activities such as seed balls to keep learners engaged and connected to the curriculum.

Gardening Takes Root in Maine Schools: Kingfield Elementary Kids Grow and Eat their Own Produce in Outdoor Classroom

Jul 26, 2019 From 2015 until 2018, Maine SNAP-Ed and Healthy Community Coalition of Greater Franklin County teamed up with the local Master Gardener program and Kingfield Elementary School. They worked together to expand their school garden. Kingsfield is a SNAP-Ed eligible, rural school. Together, they developed a 6-8-week after-school program called Growing Gardeners. 

Gleaning for Health: Stocking Food Bank Shelves with Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Nov 19, 2018 Although Merced is in the middle of California’s breadbasket, the Merced County Food Bank received few donations of fruits and vegetables, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Each year, the food bank distributes 4.4 million pounds of donated food to more than 100 neighborhood food pantries.

Gleaning for Nutrition Security: Farm-to-Community Partnerships Across Maine

Apr 15, 2024 Maine SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educators engage with local farmers to increase access to these healthy local foods with the aim of addressing nutrition security. Specifically, educators facilitate farm-to-community collaborations to support gleaning or excess harvesting partnerships to collect and distribute quality produce that would otherwise go to waste.

Gleaning from Farms to the Communities

Oct 17, 2017 **An updated story on this program is available.** Nutrition Educators in Sagadahoc and Lincoln counties partnered with their local food security organizations to distribute gleaned produce to high-need sites throughout the Midcoast. At one low-income housing site, Bath Housing, an estimated 150 individuals received nearly 1,000 pounds of free, fresh, local produce in the summer of 2016.

Go!Healthy Eat Smart Food Box Program

May 08, 2017 The Go!Healthy Eat Smart Food Box program establishes local produce buying clubs, where pre-packed bags of regionally-grown, fresh produce are sold at wholesale cost weekly for thirteen weeks.
