Older Adults in North Carolina Stay Healthy and Active with SNAP-Ed

Summary

SNAP-Ed health educators at the Poe Center for Health Education have partnered with congregate meal sites in their region to help keep their participants healthy and moving.  Through a 16-week evidence-based exercise program entitled Stay Strong Stay Healthy (SSSH), participants develop the fitness, flexibility, and balance needed to live independently longer.

Community in Action: Walk Fairview Day

Walking around the neighborhood is a great way to add physical activity to your day and improve your health. But what if there are barriers in your environment to physical activity? A group of youth from the Fairview Community in Hillsborough, North Carolina identified these barriers.

Adapting Garden Leadership Trainings to a Virtual Setting

Community Gardens serve as a tool to improve food insecurity and provide nutrition education. They also strengthen community relationships! These communal spaces have been especially important during the COVID pandemic. They allow an opportunity for connection and provide an activity that can be meditative and restorative.

Transitioning Cooking Classes for a Virtual Audience

Cooking classes not only have continued during the pandemic, but the Poe Center for Health Education’s SNAP-Ed cooking programs increased the number of participants by transitioning to virtual platforms. 

Transition to Virtual Summer Camp Expands Reach of Program

The Poe Center for Health Education hosts two week-long Healthy Habits Camp sessions every summer. Kids learn about the importance of nutrition and physical activity through classes, games, gardens, and hands-on cooking experiences. At Healthy Habits Camp, breakfast and lunch are provided through the summer meals program. Additional food tasting occurs with SNAP Ed cooking activities.
