  • Gleaning from Farms to the Communities

    Nutrition Educators in Sagadahoc and Lincoln counties partnered with their local food security organizations to distribute gleaned produce to high-need sites throughout the Midcoast. At one low-income housing site, Bath Housing, an estimated 150 individuals received nearly 1,000 pounds of free, fresh, local produce in the summer of 2016.

  • Go!Healthy Eat Smart Food Box Program

    The Go!Healthy Eat Smart Food Box program establishes local produce buying clubs, where pre-packed bags of regionally-grown, fresh produce are sold at wholesale cost weekly for thirteen weeks.

  • Green Island Gardens

    Youth worked in a community garden and planter program, called the Green Island Gardens (GIG) project. It was a summer job program through Pernet. The goal was to beautify the retail and residential areas in Worchester. Pernet adopted a state-owned island for this project. They committed to maintain the grounds, and grow fresh produce, herbs, and flowers.

  • Grocery Stores Receive Healthy Drink Recipes

    The goal of Rethink Your Drink Nevada (RYD) is to promote healthy beverage choices and decrease the intake of sugary drinks among households with young, school-age children (6-12 years-old). In 2017, RYD started to work with grocery stores in low-income communities to promote choosing healthy drinks where families shop. The team distributed free recipes for low-cost, simple, and healthy drinks at in-store events.

    Prevalence of childhood obesity is higher (22.4%) in Latino children ages 2-19 years than in non-Latino white children (14%). Obesity rates have recently decreased among 2-5- year- olds nationwide. However, racial and ethnic health disparities persist and indicate the urgency of early prevention efforts in high-risk communities.

    Three years ago, Troy used to go his local corner store to grab a soda and a bag of chips. Today, when he visits that same corner store in North Philadelphia he chooses an orange and a bottle of water.
