The curriculum is based on a parenting education needs assessment performed in southern Nevada and previous nutrition and parenting research. During the program, children and parents learn about healthy eating and nutrition, gain positive parent-child interaction skills, and practice school readiness skills by reading children’s books about healthy eating and cooking together.
This curriculum is divided into seven individual lessons. Lessons 2-7 recommend an appropriate book to be read aloud to the children and parents in the class. The seven lessons include topics such as hand washing, food safety, MyPlate, cooking with kids, cultural foods, feeding and hunger, picky eaters, and fruits and vegetables. Lessons 2-7 include recipes to be made in-class and a recipe for participants to try at home. Suggested books are mentioned for parents to read at home to their kids.
